HTI Launches À La Class, a Gamified Learning App for Hospitality Employees

Hospitality Training Goes Gen-Z With À La Class – À La Class Launches Bite-Sized Learning Platform for Hospitality Staff. Developed by À La Class, a new gamified learning platform from Hospitality Training Institute India (HTI), the app aims to make hospitality training more engaging and accessible through short, mobile-first lessons tailored for restaurant and hotel staff.

As the hospitality industry grapples with skill gaps, staff retention challenges, and increasing operational complexity, a new learning platform is seeking to transform how frontline employees are trained.

À La Class, a gamified micro-learning app developed by Hospitality Training Institute India (HTI), has been launched to help hospitality staff build industry knowledge through short, interactive lessons delivered on smartphones. The platform is designed around Gen-Z learning habits, offering educational content in bite-sized formats that can be completed in just a few minutes each day.

The concept was developed by hospitality trainer Tsunami Costabir, who drew inspiration from her own experience working in restaurants and learning languages through digital platforms. According to Costabir, modern hospitality employees are expected to understand increasingly sophisticated menus, wines, coffees, food safety requirements, and guest interactions, yet often lack the time and resources for traditional classroom training.

“Restaurants today are offering well-travelled, curated menus to guests. Often, dishes and ingredients are listed in foreign languages, making it complex for staff to grasp. So when a curious guest asks a follow-up question, servers don’t know what to say, sometimes they aren’t informed, other times they lack confidence,” said Tsunami Costabir.

Costabir explained that the idea for the platform emerged after observing the success of language-learning applications. “I couldn’t commit to a daily class for a year, but I used Duolingo. Just a lesson a day that lasted about two minutes. It helped me build up my French language skills and form the habit of learning. So I thought of building a similar app for hospitality.”

The app currently offers three free courses: Food Safety Supervisor, based on FSSAI’s FoSTaC certification programme; Wine Essentials; and Being a Barista, which introduces learners to coffee fundamentals.

According to the company, food safety education has emerged as one of the platform’s most popular offerings, particularly as restaurants face stricter compliance requirements.

“Though the legal requirement is one Food Safety Supervisor per 25 food handlers, that ratio is simply not enough considering the stringent standards. It will help an establishment enormously if all of their staff are equipped with the knowledge to execute perfect operations,” Costabir noted.

Beyond generic training modules, À La Class also offers customised onboarding solutions that allow restaurants and cafés to digitise their own menus, service standards, grooming guidelines, brand stories, and guest interaction protocols. These modules can then be rolled out to employees through short learning segments accessible via mobile devices.

The company follows a subscription-based model, charging a one-time implementation fee for custom content uploads and a monthly fee covering user management, app usage, technical support, and updates. It also states that intellectual property rights for customized course content remain with the client organization.

Founded by Hospitality Training Institute India Pvt. Ltd., the platform builds on HTI’s 25 years of experience in training customer-facing personnel across restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and retail sectors.

For an industry increasingly seeking scalable and cost-effective workforce training solutions, À La Class represents a growing shift toward mobile-first, technology-enabled learning designed specifically for hospitality professionals.
