Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has signed a greenfield 300-room Taj hotel in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, betting on the growing appeal of one of India’s leading spiritual and leisure destinations.
Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has announced the signing of a new Taj-branded hotel in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, further strengthening its footprint in the country’s fast-growing spiritual tourism segment. The greenfield project will feature 300 keys and be developed across 70 acres in a phased manner in partnership with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited.
The upcoming Taj Rameswaram will include a wellness centre, two specialty restaurants, a bar lounge, a pool bar, banquet and convention facilities, meeting rooms, a swimming pool, fitness centre and a spa with multiple treatment rooms. The project is designed to cater to leisure travellers, pilgrims, wellness seekers and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) guests.
Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President, Real Estate & Development, IHCL, said that Rameswaram is among India’s most significant spiritual destinations and is witnessing increasing tourism potential due to improved connectivity and infrastructure development.
The resort will be strategically located near the iconic Pamban Bridge with direct beach access and connectivity to NH87. It will also be within easy reach of the revered Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and among the country’s most important religious landmarks.
Industry observers note that Rameswaram is expected to benefit from several infrastructure upgrades, including the expansion of NH87 into a four-lane highway, railway station redevelopment and a proposed domestic airport, all of which are expected to improve accessibility and boost tourism demand.
The signing is part of IHCL’s broader expansion strategy across India. With the addition of the Rameswaram project, the company will have 35 hotels in Tamil Nadu, including 16 properties under development, reinforcing its leadership position in the state’s hospitality market.
The development also reflects rising investor confidence in India’s spiritual tourism sector, where improving infrastructure, growing domestic travel and increasing interest in wellness experiences are driving demand for branded hospitality offerings.
