Global competition puts the spotlight on real-world bartending skills as India’s top talent competes for a place on the international stage.
Monkey Shoulder, the premium blended malt Scotch whisky brand, has launched the India leg of its global World Ultimate Bartender Championship (WUBC), bringing a renewed focus on talent development, skill-building and career progression within the bartending community. The 2026 edition marks the ninth year of the championship in India and has already attracted more than 1,500 registrations, the highest participation in the competition’s history.
Unlike traditional cocktail competitions that often emphasise creative presentations and signature drinks, the Ultimate Bartender Championship is designed to test the practical skills required behind a busy bar. Participants are challenged across six skill-based rounds covering industry knowledge, precision pouring, sensory nosing, service standards, speed, consistency and the preparation of a perfectly balanced Monkey Shoulder Old Fashioned. The competition culminates in a high-pressure head-to-head round-building challenge that determines the ultimate champion.
Speaking about the initiative, Vidit Mantri, Brand Ambassador, Monkey Shoulder India, said that great bartending extends far beyond what is served in a glass. According to him, knowledge, instinct, precision and personality are equally important, and the championship provides bartenders with an opportunity to test and strengthen those skills while advancing their careers.
The India edition officially commenced with the New Delhi round held at Bizou Bizou, Aerocity, where more than 100 bartenders competed across a range of practical challenges. The event concluded with Mayank and Krish from Botai, along with Sachin from Upside Bar, emerging as the city’s finalists. The three winners will now advance to the national finale, where they will compete against finalists from across the country for the opportunity to represent India internationally.

The championship will continue across multiple cities including Kolkata, Pune, Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Jaipur, while Guwahati, Chennai and Jaipur have joined the competition as new destinations this year.
The national winner will earn the chance to compete at the World Ultimate Bartender Championship Global Final, where bartenders from more than 20 countries will go head-to-head for the global title.
Commenting on the global competition, Joe Petch, Monkey Shoulder Global Brand Ambassador, said the championship was created to celebrate bartenders who master the fundamentals, demonstrate consistency and bring authentic personality to the hospitality industry. He added that the global final provides an international platform for talented professionals to showcase their abilities while gaining exposure among peers from around the world.
As India’s cocktail culture continues to mature, initiatives such as the Ultimate Bartender Championship are helping elevate professional standards while creating meaningful opportunities for bartenders to learn, compete and build long-term careers in hospitality.
